Manhattan S4-R Freesat 4K TV Recorder Emerges as a Formidable Sky Q Competitor
Sky Q has long reigned as a beloved TV device in the UK, celebrated for its award-winning performance and decade-long service. Its ability to record content onto an integrated hard drive has cemented its status as a household favourite. However, a new contender has entered the arena, poised to disrupt the market with a significant edge: the Manhattan S4-R Freesat 4K TV Recorder.
A Subscription-Free Entertainment Solution
Unveiled by the TV Team at Manhattan, the S4-R mirrors Sky Q in functionality, utilising a satellite dish to deliver shows and movies while featuring internal storage for recordings. It includes a full interactive TV guide and live TV pause capabilities. The standout advantage is its cost structure: after the initial purchase, users enjoy over 100 TV and radio channels without any subscription fees. While premium content like Sky Sports or Sky Cinema is unavailable, this device offers a robust option for those seeking entertainment without recurring bills.
Advanced Features and Recording Capabilities
Similar to Sky Q, the S4-R supports simultaneous recording of multiple channels and launches with a 500GB hard drive, capable of storing approximately 300 hours of content. Enhanced versions with 1TB and 2TB capacities are scheduled for release soon, catering to users requiring additional space. The device also matches Sky's live TV controls, enabling pause and rewind functions during broadcasts.
Manhattan emphasises a clean, user-friendly interface, search functionality, and access to more than 60,000 hours of on-demand content through apps such as BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5.
Executive Insights and Market Positioning
Alex Arbab-Zadeh, Manhattan's COO, highlighted that the company is expanding on the success of its Freeview recorder by delivering a straightforward, subscription-free experience to Freesat. He noted that the S4-R significantly enhances recording capabilities, allowing up to four programmes to be recorded at once—doubling the previous limit. Arbab-Zadeh described the S4-R as a compelling alternative to subscription TV, offering greater flexibility, choice, and a means to avoid expensive monthly commitments.
Availability and Pricing Details
