Manchester United have ended their pursuit of Mexican teenage sensation Gilberto Mora, despite spending six months scouting the 17-year-old Tijuana starlet. The decision comes as Mora continues to impress at the World Cup, where he has helped co-hosts Mexico reach the last 16.
Scouting mission fails to secure deal
United scouts closely monitored Mora's progress both at his club and during the World Cup, where he became the youngest player in the tournament. However, the teenager's standout performances attracted interest from several of United's biggest rivals, including Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona.
While United remain keen on acquiring the world's brightest young talent, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is unwilling to engage in a bidding war for Mora. The 17-year-old recently signed a new long-term contract with Tijuana, which includes a £20 million buy-out clause designed to facilitate a move to a top European club.
Mora's World Cup exploits
Mora, who shares the same agent as Erling Haaland, became the youngest Mexican to appear at a World Cup when he debuted in Mexico's opening win over South Africa. He further etched his name in history by starting in Mexico's last-32 victory over Ecuador, making him the second-youngest player to start a knockout match after Pelé in 1958.
Regarded as one of the brightest prospects in world football, Mora has made just 50 senior appearances for Tijuana. Despite his immense potential, Ratcliffe has shown a reluctance to be drawn into inflated negotiations, as evidenced by United's recent withdrawals from talks for Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes.
United's decision underscores a strategic shift under Ratcliffe, prioritizing financial discipline over high-stakes bidding wars, even for generational talents like Mora.
