Man Utd identify third midfield target as Ederson set for medical

Manchester United are pressing ahead with plans to sign three midfielders this summer, with Atalanta's Ederson awaiting a second medical and French international Manu Kone emerging as a new target.

Ederson set for second medical

Atalanta and Brazil star Ederson is set to undergo a second medical with Manchester United doctors after the club agreed a £35m deal plus £3.8m in add-ons back in June. The transfer was delayed due to Ederson's World Cup involvement, but with Brazil eliminated, the 27-year-old is now free to complete the move. He had an initial medical test in the United States while on international duty and will conduct his second test in the UK. Ederson has reportedly agreed a four-year contract at Old Trafford and would become the 11th Brazilian to play for Manchester United.

Third midfield transfer identified: Manu Kone

Despite already agreeing moves for Ederson and Chelsea's Andrey Santos in deals worth a combined £85m, United's midfield overhaul is not finished. Reports indicate they are also interested in Roma's Manu Kone, who has impressed at the World Cup for France. The 25-year-old joined Roma from Borussia Monchengladbach, initially on loan in 2024 before making the move permanent for £15m in 2025. Roma would reportedly accept bids in the region of £50m, more than tripling their investment after just one season in Serie A. Kone was not at the top of United's wishlist initially, but inflated valuations of Premier League targets like Brighton's Carlos Baleba, Bournemouth's Alex Scott, and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, combined with Kone's fine World Cup form, have made him a viable option.

Midfield rebuild priority

With Michael Carrick now permanently in charge, United are focusing on reshaping their midfield after prioritising defence and attack in previous windows. Casemiro's departure has left a significant void, while the futures of Manuel Ugarte and Mason Mount remain uncertain. The club have missed out on several key targets, including Elliot Anderson, Matheus Fernandes, and Sandro Tonali, but are moving swiftly to identify alternatives.
