Chelsea's Stance on Cucurella
Chelsea, who signed Cucurella from Brighton for £60 million last summer, were unwilling to let him leave without a substantial fee. The Blues also wanted a mandatory purchase option, which United rejected. As a result, the deal collapsed, leaving United manager Erik ten Hag to explore other options.
Alternative Targets
With the transfer window closing soon, Ten Hag is now considering other left-back options. Tottenham's Sergio Reguilon has been linked, but Spurs are reluctant to strengthen a direct rival. Another target could be Barcelona's Marcos Alonso, though his high wages may be a stumbling block.
United's defensive woes have been exacerbated by Shaw's injury, which is expected to keep him out for several weeks. The club had identified Cucurella as the ideal short-term solution, but Chelsea's hardline stance has scuppered the move.
Meanwhile, Cucurella's future at Chelsea remains uncertain, as he has fallen down the pecking order under Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine coach has preferred Ben Chilwell and Levi Colwill at left-back, leaving Cucurella as a fringe player.
