Manchester United have made contact with Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes after his £38million move to Atletico Madrid collapsed, according to Brazilian publication O Globo. The 25-year-old Brazilian was poised to join the La Liga side, but the deal fell through after his representative Jorge Mendes prioritised Bernardo Silva's transfer to Real Madrid, reportedly frustrating Atletico who felt their bitter rivals had been given preference.
Ederson Deal Uncertain
Meanwhile, United's pursuit of Atalanta star Ederson, initially expected to arrive for £35million, remains shrouded in uncertainty. Conflicting reports suggest the transfer has collapsed, but MEN Sport understands the club insists the deal is still on. If it falls through, United could switch their attention to Gomes, who also attracted interest from Liverpool.
Carrick's Midfield Strategy
With Ederson's arrival uncertain and Andrey Santos unlikely to fully address the midfield shortage following Casemiro's exit, manager Michael Carrick faces a selection puzzle. According to The Sun, Carrick may deploy Mason Mount in a considerably deeper role than he is accustomed to. Mount, who joined United from Chelsea in 2023 for an initial £55million, has not justified that price tag as an attacking playmaker. However, his encouraging performances towards the end of last season have kept him in contention, and Carrick reportedly values his work ethic and adaptability.
Gomes Impresses Despite Relegation
Gomes impressed for a Wolves side that were relegated from the Premier League last season, earning both the fans' and teammates' Player of the Season awards. His potential arrival would bolster United's midfield options as they prepare for the new campaign under Carrick, who secured Champions League qualification last season and was appointed permanent manager.
