Leeds United's £26m Deal Hangs in Balance as Darlow Threatens Plans

Leeds United are reportedly facing a mounting fight to keep Karl Darlow at Elland Road, with Premier League side Everton the latest to take an interest in the Welsh international. Darlow became a free agent on Tuesday and is currently considering his options, with Manchester United also believed to be interested in what would be a surprise move.

According to Sky Sports, the Toffees are believed to be keen on adding depth behind Jordan Pickford and Mark Travers, and have seemingly identified Darlow as a possibility this summer. The 35-year-old has been offered a new contract with Leeds, but appears to be stalling on putting pen to paper, creating a problem for the Elland Road outfit.

Impact on Transfer Plans

The situation around Darlow has seemingly harmed Leeds' efforts in the transfer window. Leeds are drawing up a list of goalkeeping targets following the uncertainty around Darlow and the free transfer exit of Illan Meslier. Lucas Perri is on the books but has so far failed to impress after losing the number one jersey to Darlow last season. Should Darlow be retained and another keeper brought on board, an exit for Perri seems the most likely outcome.

£26m Target Zion Suzuki

Japan's World Cup keeper Zion Suzuki is among the options being looked at, with reports elsewhere suggesting Leeds are willing to offer over £26m for his services. The 23-year-old currently plies his trade in Italy with Parma and was part of the Japanese side that recently saw their World Cup campaign end in heartbreak following a last-gasp defeat to Brazil in the round of 32. Despite his team's agonising exit, his stock remains high. Indeed, his exploits for club and country have fuelled speculation of a move to the Premier League. As well as Leeds, Aston Villa are among those to have been credited with an interest recently.

Deal on Hold

However, while Suzuki is on the radar at Leeds, the club are unable to pursue the young shot-stopper at this stage. The suggestion right now is Leeds are still seeking clarity on Darlow's future.
