Freesat, the satellite TV service run by the same team behind Freeview, is offering a cost-effective alternative to expensive subscriptions like Sky Q. With April price rises and the cost of living crisis, households can now access hundreds of live and on-demand channels without monthly fees, provided they have a satellite dish.
UK retailers Argos and Currys are currently selling Freesat set-top boxes at a £50 discount, reducing the price to £179. This one-off payment covers the device, with no further charges. The boxes offer features similar to Sky Q, including recording up to four programmes simultaneously and access to apps like iPlayer, Prime Video, and Netflix.
Two models are available: a 500GB version and a 1TB option for extra recording space. However, Freesat does not include premium content such as Premier League football, F1 from Sky Sports, or Sky Cinema movies. The offer ends on April 13.
For those without a dish, the new Freely service is built into many modern TVs, offering live and on-demand content with a full TV guide and pause functionality. Alternatively, Sky's Glass Gen 2 provides dish-free access to shows, sports, and movies, with a built-in soundbar and apps like Disney+ and Apple TV+, starting at £14 per month.
