Fortnite's new Hollow Knight cosmetics bundle is priced higher than the actual game, drawing criticism from fans. The bundle, available for a limited time, costs 2,000 V-Bucks—equivalent to £17.49 if purchased as a 2,400 V-Bucks pack—while Hollow Knight itself sells for £12 on Steam and £10 on Switch. Even the sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, is cheaper at £16.75.
Bundle includes sidekick and items
The bundle features a Hollow Knight sidekick, a new cosmetic type introduced earlier this year, along with a Hallownest Grub backbling and a pickaxe resembling the Knight's Nail weapon. The items are listed in V-Bucks, Fortnite's in-game currency, which can obscure their real-world cost. The bundle is discounted from 2,700 to 2,000 V-Bucks, but players must buy a 2,400 V-Bucks pack if they have no existing balance.
Fans on the Hollow Knight subreddit have voiced their frustration. One deleted post described the bundle as 'The type of greed they talk about in the Bible.' Another user, XxX_Zeratul_XxX, wrote: 'I spent $24 on the complete collection of Kingdom Hearts games yesterday and felt a little guilty as I'm not having time to play it till November/December… Seeing this now I feel a little bit better, lol.'
FOMO tactics and in-game earnings
The bundle is scheduled to leave the Fortnite store on Thursday, October 15, about a week after its arrival, a move seen as capitalizing on fear of missing out. While Epic Games might argue that V-Bucks can be earned in-game, grinding for 2,000 V-Bucks would require significant effort—clearing a season's battle pass yields only 800 V-Bucks.
Developer Team Cherry has not commented on the issue, and it remains unclear whether they receive royalties from the collaboration, though they would have been paid at least a lump sum. Team Cherry is expected to launch a DLC expansion for Silksong, titled 'Sea Of Sorrow,' at some point this year, though details have been scarce and the studio has a history of delays.
