Tom Daley amazed by drag alter-ego Lady Godiva transformation

Tom Daley has expressed his shock and awe after seeing himself transformed into his drag alter-ego Lady Godiva. The Olympian teamed up with Drag Race star Plastique Tiara for a YouTube video in which he wore a mini dress he knitted himself, a wig, and makeup. Fans reacted enthusiastically, comparing him to an "uber glam Emma Watson".

Transformation details

In the video, Plastique Tiara applied the makeup to turn Tom into Lady Godiva while he sat in the chair with a wig cap on his head and a new knitting project in his lap. The diver was also given a blonde, plaited wig and posed in padded underwear.

Tom then put on the mint green knitted dress, completing the transformation. He posted about the process of making the dress and meeting Plastique Tiara on his Instagram, writing in the caption: "Welcome to the stage… Lady Godiva, she’s a really good diver;). I still can’t believe this is me! THANK YOU Plastique Tiara."

Fan reactions

Fans flooded the comments with their amazement. One wrote that they enjoyed the pun in Tom's drag name: "Lady Good Diver is iconic."

Olympic career

Tom first became a household name when he competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, aged 14. Though he did not win a medal at those games, he was considered a favourite to place in the top three when the Olympics returned four years later, in London. He ultimately walked away with the bronze medal in the 10m men's platform event.

Tom also competed at the 2016 Olympics in Rio and again took bronze, this time in the synchronized 10m platform. In 2021, he went to Tokyo for the games, which had been delayed a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There, he won his first gold medal for the synchronized event and also took the bronze for the solo one. In the 2024 Paris games, he took home silver in the synchronized event. The day after the closing ceremony, he announced his retirement from the sport.

Media career

The former diver has also had a flourishing media career. He participated in the first series of The Celebrity Traitors, in which he was a faithful but the second player to be murdered. The show has returned for a second series and is currently airing on BBC One.

Tom has also started presenting Game of Wool: Britain's Best Knitter, a craft competition. His love of knitting first caught public attention during the Tokyo Olympics when he was spotted knitting in the stands. He has since started a knitting business called Made with Love by Tom Daley.
