EasyJet Allows Extra Free Bag for Passengers with Medical Conditions
EasyJet Extra Free Bag for Medical Conditions

EasyJet passengers who require certain medical equipment for their health conditions may be permitted to bring an additional bag on board at no extra cost, beyond their standard cabin baggage allowance. The airline has outlined specific guidelines on its website, emphasizing that customers must notify EasyJet's Special Assistance Team at least 48 hours prior to their departure.

Eligibility and Size Restrictions

The extra bag is intended for portable medical equipment, which must not exceed dimensions of 56 x 45 x 25 cm. If the equipment is larger, it will need to be stored in the aircraft's hold. The airline states: "Portable medical equipment can be brought on board in addition to your cabin bag allowance. Portable medical devices must be no larger than 56 x 45 x 25 cm, otherwise they will have to travel in the hold."

Types of Medical Equipment Covered

Examples of equipment that qualify include:

  • CPAP machines (for sleep apnoea)
  • TENS machines (for pain relief)
  • Nebulisers (for respiratory conditions)
  • Portable dialysis machines (for kidney failure)

Passengers are also allowed up to two mobility aids, such as wheelchairs and walkers, free of charge. However, if the medical equipment is not registered with the Special Assistance Team, it may be subject to standard baggage fees if it exceeds the cabin bag allowance.

Understanding Common Medical Devices

CPAP Machines

CPAP machines are primarily used by individuals diagnosed with sleep apnoea to keep airways open during sleep. While lifestyle changes like weight loss, smoking cessation, and reduced alcohol intake can help manage the condition, many still require a CPAP machine, which the NHS provides free of charge. The machine delivers a gentle stream of air through a mask, preventing airway narrowing, improving sleep quality, reducing fatigue, and lowering the risk of complications such as high blood pressure, stroke, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and depression.

TENS Machines

TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) machines provide temporary pain relief by delivering mild electrical currents to nerves. They can be effective for short-term pain (e.g., menstrual cramps, labour, sports injuries) and chronic conditions like arthritis or endometriosis. The NHS advises consulting a healthcare professional before use.

Nebulisers

Nebulisers convert liquid medicine into a fine mist for inhalation, used by people with severe asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, or those unable to use handheld inhalers. They help loosen phlegm, making it easier to cough up, and can improve breathing and comfort during treatments.

Portable Dialysis Machines

Portable dialysis machines, such as the NxStage System One, allow patients with kidney failure to perform haemodialysis at home or while travelling, offering greater independence and flexibility. The NHS provides full training and equipment at no cost.

Passengers are reminded to contact EasyJet's Special Assistance Team at least 48 hours before their flight to arrange for the extra medical bag and ensure compliance with airline policies.
