Pearl Abyss CEO Huh Jin-young has revealed that the studio is working on a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the open-world action game Crimson Desert, stating that basic gameplay is already possible on the device. The announcement has sparked speculation that a Grand Theft Auto 6 port for the Switch 2 might also be feasible.
Pearl Abyss Confirms Switch 2 Development
Speaking during a shareholder meeting, Jin-young said: "We believe it is important to showcase Crimson Desert on as many platforms as possible. We are reviewing the Nintendo Switch 2, and it is currently being developed to a level where basic gameplay is possible." However, he cautioned that the port is far from simple, with significant obstacles remaining.
"The key is whether we can fully maintain the graphics, action, and open-world experience of Crimson Desert on that device," Jin-young explained. "The Switch 2 version still requires optimisation and technical verification, and we must also review partner collaboration and whether it meets our quality standards. Therefore, it is difficult to confirm a release schedule. We will announce it transparently once there is confirmed information."
Implications for GTA 6 on Switch 2
Crimson Desert is a massive open-world game set on the continent of Pywel, where players control Kliff as he explores a vast landscape to rebuild the Greymane faction and save the world from an ancient threat. The game features a dense world filled with missions, monsters, and secrets, drawing comparisons to Red Dead Redemption 2, Skyrim, and The Witcher 3. Given its scale, many assumed a Switch 2 port would be impossible, but Pearl Abyss's progress suggests otherwise.
If the studio succeeds in delivering a polished version of Crimson Desert on the Switch 2, it could set a precedent for other demanding titles, including Rockstar's GTA 6. The possibility of a GTA 6 port on Nintendo's next console now seems more plausible, though no official announcements have been made.
Post-Launch Improvements and Gameplay
Crimson Desert has received strong post-launch support, with updates fixing bugs and enhancing gameplay. Beyond combat, players can engage in activities like arm wrestling, card games, and pinball in local bars. The game's ambition and scope have earned it recognition as one of the year's standout releases.
