Chinese car giant BYD has announced plans for a new lineup of electric and plug-in hybrid models specifically designed in Europe to cater to European preferences. Speaking from BYD's headquarters in Shenzhen, Alfredo Altavilla, special adviser for the European market, highlighted the growing divergence between Chinese and European customer needs.
European-Centric Design Strategy
Altavilla noted that Chinese models are increasingly larger, often exceeding 4.8 meters, with a focus on rear passenger space rather than trunk size. In contrast, European buyers prioritize trunk capacity and driving dynamics suited to varied road conditions, from UK potholes to Italian mountain roads and German autobahns. This realization prompted BYD two years ago to develop a dedicated European portfolio, a move Altavilla claims is driving sales growth in the region.
The first result is the BYD Dolphin G plug-in hybrid supermini, which will be unveiled next week. This model is designed exclusively for Europe and will not be sold in China. Altavilla emphasized that no other Chinese OEM has made such a commitment, and more European-focused models are to follow.
Research and Development in Europe
BYD is investing heavily in European R&D, with a new team in Budapest and a design center in Milan. These teams are adapting existing models for European roads, including dedicated chassis and multi-link suspension systems. Altavilla explained that while China's speed limit is 90 km/h (56 mph), European cars must perform on the autobahn, rough UK roads, and winding Italian routes.
European Production Expansion
BYD's first European factory in Hungary is set to open soon, with executive vice-president Stella Li indicating that additional production capacity may be needed. The company is exploring the possibility of acquiring an existing European car plant. The Dolphin G and likely the Atto 2 will be built in Hungary.
Currently, BYD offers six all-electric and four plug-in hybrid models in the UK. The Dolphin G, the smallest and cheapest plug-in hybrid, will offer a combined range of over 600 miles. A full-size SUV, the BYD Ti7, is also on the way to rival the Land Rover Discovery and Defender.
Future Model Plans
Altavilla previously told The Independent that every BYD model except the smallest Dolphin Surf will be available as both an EV and a plug-in hybrid. BYD is also building its own ultra-fast Flash Charging network in the UK, promising charging times comparable to refueling a petrol car.
Market Growth in the UK
BYD's UK sales have surged since its 2023 launch. Last year, it sold 51,422 cars for a 2.54% market share. In just the first four months of 2026, sales have already exceeded 26,000, capturing a 3.45% share.
