Scottish butcher Simon Bowie has shared a bacon-preparation method that offers a quicker, more convenient way to cook the meat than on the hob or under the grill. The method reduces mess, making it handy for busy mornings.
Bacon is a breakfast favourite in many households, whether it’s served alongside an English breakfast or piled into a sandwich. However, getting it cooked just right can sometimes be a messy business, with sizzling fat splattering across the hob and pans left to wash up afterwards. While bacon can also be cooked in the air fryer, it can be hard to know when it’s cooked and requires constant checking.
Microwave method takes under five minutes
The recipe notes said: “While giving your bacon a blast in the microwave might not be the first cooking method that pops into your head, it’s a great life hack for those mornings when you simply don’t have time to get the frying pan out.”
This recipe serves one person, but can easily be doubled or tripled depending on how many rashers of bacon you need. It also takes less than five minutes to prepare and less than two minutes to cook, much quicker than in a frying pan.
Simple steps for crispy bacon
All you’ll need for this recipe is three rashers of bacon per person. The recipe notes added: “Personal preferences for the crispiness of your bacon will determine cooking time, but these simple steps will have a bacon buttie in your hand in a game-changing matter of minutes.”
Firstly, place a sheet of kitchen roll on top of a microwaveable plate. This will help to soak up any liquid. Lay out the required number of rashers, making sure they are spread slightly apart. Place another piece of kitchen roll on top to protect the inside of your microwave from splatters.
Cook on full power for two minutes
Cook on full power for 2 minutes, or roughly 30 seconds per rasher at 900W. The recipe said: “This is completely personal preference, so we recommend a bit of trial and error. This will cook the bacon through but leave it pale and not yet crispy. Fire them in for another 30 to 40 seconds to crisp up the edges.”
Remove from the microwave and serve up in a roll with a sauce of your choice. The notes from the butcher added: “There you have it. Bacon in a hurry, and no greasy pans to wash up. It’s a win-win.”
