Brighton have agreed a deal worth up to £50 million for Tottenham Hotspur defender Luka Vuskovic, a 19-year-old Croatia international who has never played a competitive match for Spurs. The initial fee is £46 million, with an additional £4 million in add-ons.
Vuskovic's Journey to Brighton
Vuskovic joined Tottenham from Hajduk Split in summer 2025 for around £12 million but was immediately loaned to Hamburg for the 2025/26 season. He made 30 appearances in all competitions for the German club, scoring six Bundesliga goals. His performances earned him a place in Croatia's World Cup squad, where he became the youngest player to represent Croatia at a World Cup when he faced England in the opening group stage match in the United States.
Tottenham have included a 20 per cent sell-on clause and matching rights for any future transfer of the Croatian defender. The deal is notable as Brighton had previously sold defender Jan Paul van Hecke to Spurs for £52 million this summer. Brighton have also signed another centre-back, Pascal Struijk from Leeds United, for £20 million.
Interest from Europe's Elite
The signing is considered a coup for Brighton, as the Daily Mail reported that both Bayern Munich and Barcelona were interested in Vuskovic. Brighton initially made a £30 million bid, which was rejected, before returning with the significantly improved offer that was accepted.
Hamburg Boss Praises Young Leader
Hamburg head coach Merlin Polzin praised Vuskovic's leadership and mentality during his time in the Bundesliga. 'What truly sets Luka apart is his incredible will to win,' Polzin said. 'He always wants to improve. His attitude towards being a professional footballer is top-notch. I've only had the privilege of working with a handful of players who have such a mindset.'
Polzin added: 'I don't want to limit him. When you have such a leadership role at 19 and your career takes off like this, I believe he's capable of anything.'
Goal Threat from Defence
Vuskovic has also proven to be a goal-scoring defender, netting six Bundesliga goals last season and seven league goals during his previous loan spell at Westerlo in Belgium in the 2024/25 season.
