Arsenal have made Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez their top priority after Paris Saint-Germain made clear that Bradley Barcola is not available for transfer this summer. The Gunners are pushing for a quick deal to bolster their attacking options as they prepare to defend their Premier League title next season.
Alvarez and Barcola Targets
Alvarez and Barcola had been two of the most prominent names linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium. Alvarez has expressed his desire to leave Diego Simeone's side, sparking interest from several top European clubs. Barcelona reportedly tabled a proposal involving Ferran Torres plus cash for the 26-year-old, but Atletico turned down the approach. Alvarez has a reported release clause of €500 million (£432 million), and Atletico have warned suitors they must meet their asking price.
Barcola, who had limited playing time at PSG last season, attracted interest from Arsenal and Liverpool. However, according to The Independent, the European champions wish to retain him. The circumstances may shift after the World Cup, but Arsenal are now pursuing a 'quick deal' for Alvarez as their alternative.
Arsenal's Pursuit of Alvarez
Arsenal are keen to complete a deal for Alvarez before pre-season begins, as competition for the player appears to have eased. A previous sticking point has been Arsenal's reluctance to exceed £90 million, while Atletico are holding out for more than £100 million. In a boost to the Gunners, Spanish radio station COPE reports that Atletico are refusing to negotiate with Barcelona and are instead working with Arsenal on a deal for Alvarez.
Opening up about his future in June, Alvarez said: "I spoke with people at the club, with those I had to speak with and the best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream. It's not the time to talk about this, but I also can't hide it. I try to be an honest person."
