Amazon Prime Day kicks off on June 23, offering bargain hunters a chance to save big. However, cybersecurity experts are warning shoppers to stay vigilant as hackers ramp up efforts to steal personal data. Check Point, a leading security firm, has identified a surge in malicious Amazon-themed web domains in the lead-up to the sale.
Thousands of Fake Domains Registered
Between December 2025 and May 2026, a total of 6,843 new Amazon-themed web domains were registered worldwide. The busiest month was April 2026, with 1,446 domains appearing. According to Check Point, this gives attackers a two-month window to “age” a domain, making it appear legitimate and avoiding detection. Roughly 1 in every 11 of these domains has been classified as malicious or suspicious.
How Prime Day Scams Work
Check Point explained that Prime Day scams succeed because they closely mimic normal shopping behaviour. “Familiar branding, convincing checkout pages, delivery alerts, and last-minute urgency” are used to trick consumers. The safest approach, they advise, is to slow down the purchase journey and verify what is real before clicking, logging in, or paying.
Five Tips to Stay Safe
To help shoppers stay safe, Check Point and Amazon recommend the following rules:
- Check the URL: Many fraudulent domains imitate Amazon’s real URL. Look out for extra characters, hyphenated brand names, or unusual endings like .top or .online.
- Don’t click links: Avoid clicking links sent via text, social media, or email. Instead, go directly to Amazon.co.uk.
- Beware of too-good-to-be-true deals: Scammers often offer unrealistic discounts or refunds.
- Watch for urgency tactics: Messages claiming deals are ending soon or accounts are about to be suspended are common red flags.
- Verify account alerts: Be cautious of emails saying your Prime account will be shut down.
