Northumberland play café 'flourishing' four months after opening
Northumberland play café flourishing four months after opening

The Willow Bean play café in Bedlington is flourishing just four months after opening, proving popular with families in the Northumberland town.

Founded by Beth Larby in July, the business at 8 Market Place combines thoughtful play experiences for children with a welcoming environment for families, designed to feel calm, welcoming, and nurturing. The café features curated spaces that encourage independent play and creativity, while offering parents and carers a place to chat and relax. It occupies a historic building dating back to 1851, a site that has always been used to bring people together.

Owner's vision and support

Beth explained her reasons for setting up the business: "I've always been passionate about creating spaces where families feel welcomed and supported. My occupational therapy background has definitely influenced the design of The Willow Bean."

"Everything has been created with families in mind, from the way the space feels to providing quieter areas for children who need them. We wanted to create an environment that welcomes as many families as possible."

She added: "As soon as I viewed the premises, I loved the feel of the place and could immediately see its potential. The building has such a rich history and has always been somewhere that brings people together, which felt perfectly aligned with what I wanted The Willow Bean to become."

Business Northumberland, which supports independent retailers through Northumberland County Council, and the Northumberland Small Business Service have both helped Beth as she started the venture. Along with other local authorities and business groups, they provided valuable support.

Community response and future plans

Beth said: "It has been amazing seeing people enjoying the space. Taking a step back amongst all the chaos and watching children smile, families laugh and people genuinely enjoying their time here has been incredible."

"Opening The Willow Bean has been incredibly rewarding. Seeing families enjoying the space exactly as I'd imagined has made all the hard work worthwhile."

"We've had such positive feedback from parents who appreciate having a calm environment where they can spend quality time with their children and meet other local families. I hope The Willow Bean continues to be a place where people feel welcomed, supported and connected."

Councillor Richard Wearmouth, Cabinet member at Northumberland County Council, said: "It's fantastic to see businesses like The Willow Bean Play Café bringing new life and opportunities to our town centres."

"Not only has Beth created a welcoming and inclusive space for families, but she has also established a community-focused business that reflects the strong entrepreneurial spirit we see across Northumberland. We are delighted to have supported The Willow Bean on its journey and wish the team every success as the business continues to grow and flourish."

The café currently offers three play sessions each weekday at 9.15am, 11.15am, and 1.15pm, with each session lasting around 90 minutes. Beth plans to introduce Saturday openings in the near future, with more details available on the café's website.
