Harbourside restaurant 1832 Porthcawl closes for good

1832 Porthcawl, a harbourside restaurant and bar on the Eastern Promenade in South Wales, has closed its doors for good. The venue served its final meals and drinks on Sunday.

Owners cite rising costs

Those running the business said they had reached the "incredibly difficult decision" because soaring costs had made it "no longer viable" to keep trading. The venue offered food and beverages, hosted live music and events, and, positioned at Porthcawl Harbour, provided diners with views across the Bristol Channel.

In a statement, the owners thanked customers for their support and staff for their commitment.

Statement from the owners

The statement read: "It is with great sadness that we have made the incredibly difficult decision to close the restaurant.

"As a small independent business in the hospitality sector, it is no longer viable with rising costs in the current economic climate.

"We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all our loyal customers, friends and the local community who have supported us over the years.

"To extend, a special thank you to our wonderful team for their hard work, dedication, commitment and understanding during these difficult times.

"All future reservations after Sunday, November 1 will receive an email or call to advise of the closure."

Customers react

One customer commented: "But what has always made it such a special place is the amazing staff. Always so friendly, attentive and genuinely caring. Over the years, many of you have become what we'd like to say friends, and we've always been made to feel so welcome whenever we walked through the door.

"I feel incredibly sorry for everyone involved that it has come to this, especially so close to Christmas. My heart really goes out to all the staff and their families at what must be such an upsetting and worrying time.

"Another independent local business sadly unable to continue with the ever-increasing costs of simply trying to keep the doors open.

"Thank you to everyone at 1832 for all the wonderful memories, fabulous food, drinks, laughs and friendship over the years. You will be very sadly missed in Porthcawl."

A second patron added: "So sad to hear this news. We, as a family, have fond memories of celebrating birthdays etc with you. Lovely food and very caring staff. Good luck to you all, you will be greatly missed."
