A coastal pub that once served travellers crossing the historic Menai Suspension Bridge has vanished, leaving behind nothing but a hole in the ground valued at half a million pounds. The Mostyn Arms in Menai Bridge, on the Isle of Anglesey, reportedly shut its doors around 2009, according to the website By Gone Boozers, and has now been completely demolished.
Historic Pub Lost to Time
Before its closure, The Mostyn Arms had been a local fixture since at least 1850. It was a popular inn for those journeying across Thomas Telford's Menai Suspension Bridge, which opened in 1826. For years, the pub offered sea views and a tranquil spot for patrons to enjoy a pint at picnic tables outside. However, after shutting down, the building fell into disrepair, becoming overgrown with bushes and weeds.
Planning Permission for Care Home
In 2025, planning permission was granted to transform the site into a 10-bedroom residential care home for people aged over 55. The applicants cited an increasing demand for housing adapted to the needs of an ageing population. Despite local opposition concerning traffic and parking, the planning officer confirmed sufficient space for drop-offs. Councillor Jeff Evans strongly supported the development, noting the building had been empty for 15 years and emphasising the island's need for care facilities. He stated that some residents had been forced to send elderly relatives off the island for care, calling the project a wonderful opportunity.
Site Now Up for Auction
The cleared plot is set to be sold via an online auction through All Wales Auction, hosted on the Williams and Goodwin The Property People website on 21 May. The site is described as having access from two levels, situated near university property and private residences, with views towards the Menai Strait and the mainland. While the current planning permission is for a care home (C2 Use Class), the auction house notes the site may also be suitable for residential use, subject to obtaining the necessary permissions. Concept drawings for a residential development are included in the legal pack, but bidders are advised to verify any change of use with the local authority, as approval is not guaranteed.
The guide price for the former Mostyn Arms site stands at £500,000. For more information, contact All Wales Auction on 01248 753939.
