Wilko is reminding pet owners to prepare emergency kits for their animals, sharing seven essential items to keep on hand in case households are left without everyday supplies for up to 72 hours.
The retailer's advice follows the government's launch of its Be Ready campaign, which urges people across the UK to stock up on food, water and batteries for situations that could leave them without access to essentials for three days.
Retailer sees rise in emergency purchases
A spokesperson for Wilko said: "We have seen an influx of customers buying torches, power banks, and water for their household after the government's 'Be Ready' campaign."
"However, it's also important for pet owners to prepare for emergencies that could lead to them staying indoors for long periods. Pets are sensitive to unplanned events, and preparing kits for them ensures that they feel safe and protected at home," they added.
The spokesperson explained: "Simply buying some extra food or a bag of litter after each shop can save you and your furry friend from panic buying if an emergency were to happen, as well as save you money for other essentials on the list."
Seven items for a pet emergency kit
Wilko advises owners to keep enough food to last at least three days, including canned wet food or dry food with a long shelf life that can be stored at room temperature. Those who usually feed their pets fresh food should keep an extra supply of tinned or dry food in case electricity is lost and refrigeration is unavailable.
Bottled water is also highlighted, with the government advising households to keep at least three litres of good-quality water per person. Ensuring pets have clean drinking water helps prevent dehydration.
A pet first aid kit is recommended, which can be bought ready-made or assembled at home. Suggested items include bandages, scissors, wound wash, cotton wool, tweezers, self-adhesive tape, dressings, antiseptic wipes and a steel bowl.
Comfort and travel preparations
Owners are also encouraged to stock toiletries for three days, such as cat litter, hay, waste bags or puppy pads, depending on the animal. Keeping extra blankets available gives pets somewhere warm and familiar to rest or hide if they become unsettled.
A secure travel carrier should be ready in case owners need to leave home at short notice, and a few safe toys can help keep pets occupied and provide mental and physical stimulation during long periods indoors.
