A group of friends were left baffled when they saw 'MKT' on their restaurant bill, and they weren't the only ones confused by the label. The viral moment, captured by TikTok user @aribella_menold, has amassed over 2.2 million views and sparked widespread debate about restaurant pricing transparency.
What Does 'MKT' Mean?
Hospitality payment specialists at Dojo explained that 'MKT' (or 'MP') stands for 'market price.' This indicates the price of an item is not fixed and fluctuates depending on the current market rate. Dojo noted that items such as seafood, premium meat cuts, seasonal produce, and imported ingredients are commonly marked as MKT. They said: 'Listing items on menus as MKT allows restaurants to adjust their pricing in line with their cost, without reprinting menus.'
The Viral Bill That Sparked Confusion
The footage shows a receipt totaling $159.14 (£118) among three guests after a steak dinner. The text overlay read: 'POV: You didn't know what MKT meant on the steak menu and now you're paying for it.' Commenters were equally perplexed, with many questioning why the total was so substantial and expressing frustration over the lack of upfront pricing.
Who Is Responsible for Explaining MKT Pricing?
The viral TikTok ignited a debate over whether the customer should ask or the server should explain. One commenter stated: 'Honestly, shame on your server for not informing you of the price when it's clearly not listed.' Another countered: 'I have never been anywhere where they told you the cost upfront unless you asked... it's totally the customer's fault for not asking when there is NO PRICE LISTED.' A third added: 'I looked up market value once and then asked the price. It was like double what Google told me.'
Expert Advice for Diners and Servers
The specialists at Dojo remarked: 'In these situations, transparency from both sides is key. It's likely the server assumed the customer was familiar with the pricing or would ask if unsure.' They advised diners to feel comfortable asking for clarification on any MKT-priced items. For servers, they recommended offering a prompt such as: 'Just to note, I can provide today's price for any items listed as MKT upon request.'
How to Avoid Confusion in the Future
To prevent similar misunderstandings, diners should proactively ask about market price items before ordering. Restaurants, in turn, can improve transparency by training staff to mention that MKT items have variable pricing and to offer the current price without being asked. This approach can enhance the dining experience and reduce bill shock.
