Walkers has brought back its Merry Chrispmas advent calendars, giving shoppers a savoury alternative to chocolate in the run-up to Christmas. The calendars, which contain 24 individual bags of crisps, have been spotted on shelves at a branch of Iceland, according to a social media post by newfoodsuk.
Three flavour variants available
One of the two versions showcased in the post features four crisp varieties: Ready Salted, Cheese and Onion, Prawn Cocktail, and Salt and Vinegar. The second contains three Doritos varieties: Cool Original, Chili Heatwave, and Tangy Cheese.
A third variant, highlighted in a separate post by Money Saver By Dansway, includes Cheese Quavers, Really Cheesy Wotsits, Ready Salted French Fries, Salt and Vinegar Squares, Picked Onion Monster Munch, and Roast Beef Monster Munch.
Shoppers react to the calendars
Numerous shoppers expressed excitement about the calendars, with one commenting: "I need them all." Several tagged relatives and friends in the comments, with one writing: "I know someone who would like one of these."
Another person said: "Can someone buy me this advent calendar, don't care about chocolate!" Another wrote: "Oohhh I need to be getting one of these... or all three." A different user said: "My type of advent calendar," while another said: "This is one definitely for me." Someone else wrote: "Ohhh amazing!"
Value for money questioned
Each advent calendar is said to retail at £10, working out at roughly 42p per packet. However, some questioned whether they offered genuine value for money, noting that a multipack of 20 bags of Walkers crisps is currently available at Iceland for £4.85 - less than half the cost of the advent calendar for nearly the same quantity of bags.
One person said: "Why would you pay £10 for this when you can these cheaper?" Another wrote: "Er, isn't that just four x six packs of crisps with extra cardboard?" But, replying, another wrote: "Isn't a chocolate advent calendar just a bar of Dairy Milk with extra plastic, foil, and cardboard? Be quiet, we've needed this for ages."
