Streamed auctions for lab-grown diamonds are proliferating on TikTok, offering consumers a low-cost entry into the diamond market, but experts caution that the rapid-fire sales do not guarantee quality. Buyers can purchase loose stones for $100 to $200 per carat, a fraction of the cost of natural diamonds.
Andrea Greenhill, who first encountered a livestream auction while scrolling on TikTok, was stunned by the prices. Her natural diamond engagement ring had cost thousands of dollars, yet these lab-grown diamonds were selling in seconds at a fraction of that price. “I have two rings that are both natural diamonds and cost a fortune,” she said. “I saw the prices they were going for in the auctions, and I was like, ‘This is insanity.’”
The Rise of Live Diamond Auctions
Lab-grown diamonds, which share the same chemical composition as natural diamonds, have gained acceptance in recent years. Live auctions lasting as little as 10 or 15 seconds have exploded on TikTok, drawing curious spectators, bargain hunters, and new enthusiasts. Auctioneers streaming from places like Florida, New York, and Los Angeles often start bids at just $1, creating an interactive shopping experience that attracts hundreds of viewers.
“It was only the rich and high class who could afford diamonds, and now they’re accessible to anybody and everybody, and that’s very exciting,” said Kenzie Cisneros, a jeweler and owner of Diamond Hideout. “There’s a rush in being able to say ‘I bid on this and I got it for a couple hundred bucks.’”
Buyer Experiences and Enthusiasm
Isabella Stolberg, a 21-year-old wardrobe stylist, said her whole family has gotten into watching the auctions, sometimes projecting them on a screen at home. She is drawn by the instant gratification of buying a diamond in such a short time. “There’s this feeling of once it’s gone, it’s gone, and you have that anticipation of what’s coming next – if it’s going to be bigger, if it’s going to be better, even if you’re not directly buying or bidding or consuming it,” she said.
Greenhill has purchased more than 30 diamonds through TikTok live auctions since early June, including a pink cushion and a blue emerald. She has also grown attached to watching the streams in the evening, telling her husband “my show is on” as they sit together on the couch. “I’ll be in there cheering people on because I enjoy it. It’s my nightly routine,” she said.
Quality Concerns and Expert Warnings
While most auctioneers show certification of the lab-grown diamonds during the sale, experienced jewellers caution that the speed of the auctions and fluorescent lighting can hide imperfections. “The certificate doesn’t really tell you the whole story of the diamond,” said Kim Shaul, owner of Virtue Diamonds, based in Idaho. “If it’s a legit diamond, it could be poorly cut or not have good light performance.”
Shaul added that while there are plenty of reputable sellers on TikTok, consumers don’t always know what to look for. “You can get some pretty fantastic deals on loose stones, but you might get a really garbage diamond too.”
For buyers like Cassandra Cadwell, a beauty content creator, the low price point mitigates quality worries. She sticks to a formula of not buying anything more expensive than $200 per carat and prefers large, pear-shaped diamonds. “If I’m gonna get a lab diamond on TikTok Shop, I want it to be big – give me the big ones,” she said. “I mean who doesn’t love diamonds, right?”
