A comparative taste test of tinned tuna has crowned Tesco's own-brand version the winner, beating out John West and five other supermarket alternatives. The Tesco tin, priced at just 65p, scored 9.5/10 in the review, while Aldi's offering finished last with a 1/10 rating.
The review, conducted by Angela Patrone, Senior Lifestyle Reporter, compared a 125g tin of John West tuna in spring water, costing £2.25, against own-brand versions from Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury's, Tesco, M&S and Waitrose. Four of the six own-brand tins cost 65p, one cost 80p, and Waitrose's 160g tin was priced at £1.50.
How the Tuna Was Tested
All six supermarket tunas were sampled straight from the tin after draining the liquid, allowing for a direct comparison against the John West product. Each tin was assessed on appearance, texture, and flavour.
Sainsbury's tuna, at 65p for 145g, was praised for its substantial chunks and meaty texture, though it left an odd aftertaste. It received a 7/10 rating. Lidl's version, also 65p for 145g, was described as the most flavourless in the test, scoring 4/10.
Budget Options and Premium Prices
Waitrose's tuna, the most expensive supermarket option at £1.50 for 160g, was criticised for an overpowering fishy flavour, earning a 5/10. Aldi's 65p tin was rated the worst, with the reporter noting it resembled cat food after draining and tasted similar, scoring just 1/10.
John West itself, the reporter's usual choice, scored 8/10. While the taste was immediately identifiable, the chunks were noticeably smaller than several own-brand alternatives, and it was not considered pleasant when eaten plain.
The Winner and the Runner-Up
M&S tuna, at 80p for 160g, impressed with its meaty texture and excellent flavour, scoring 9/10. However, Tesco's 65p tin ultimately took the top spot, boasting generously sized chunks and a balance of savoury saltiness and robust fish flavour that outshone even the M&S offering.
The only drawback preventing a perfect score for the Tesco tuna was the absence of a ring-pull top. The final rating stood at 9.5/10.
