Tesco's Birthday Cake Sandwich Sparks Debate

Tesco has launched a limited-edition birthday cake sandwich, sparking mixed reactions from customers. The sandwich, which includes strawberry jam, soft cheese, vanilla frosting, and sprinkles between slices of brioche-style white bread, contains 31g of sugar—35% of an adult's recommended daily intake—and 8.4g of saturated fat, or 42% of the recommended daily amount.

Priced at £3, the sandwich is available at 1,000 stores for four weeks to mark the 30th anniversary of Tesco's Clubcard. It can also be purchased as part of the Tesco meal deal for £4, alongside a drink and snack.

Social media reactions have been divided. On Reddit, one user commented, 'Birthday cake is not a flavour,' while another suggested the creation should be a criminal offence, adding, 'The Earl of Sandwich did not intend this to happen. Bet he's rolling in his grave.' On TikTok, videos of people trying the sandwich have garnered tens of thousands of views, with some comparing it to a jam sandwich with cream.

Tesco brand manager Violaine Barthe said: 'With 3.1 million sandwiches sold in Tesco each week, sandwiches make up a big proportion of Clubcard purchases and so there was only one way to celebrate Clubcard turning 30.'

The launch follows a trend of dessert-style sandwiches, including Marks & Spencer's strawberry and cream 'strawberry sando' in June, which went viral on social media.
