Tesco has issued a critical warning to its vast customer base, with millions of pounds in Clubcard vouchers poised to become worthless this weekend. Shoppers must act swiftly to redeem these vouchers before the strict deadline passes.
The Impending Expiry Deadline
The supermarket giant dispatches Clubcard vouchers to its members on a quarterly basis, specifically in February, May, August, and November. Each voucher remains valid for a period of two years from the date of issue.
The vouchers scheduled to expire were initially distributed in February 2024. They will lose all value after 11:59pm on Saturday, February 28. Industry estimates suggest that approximately £11 million worth of these vouchers are at risk of expiration, representing a significant potential loss for consumers.
How Clubcard Points Accumulate
Clubcard members earn points through various spending activities. For every £1 spent on groceries, one point is awarded. Additionally, points can be collected via Tesco Bank and Tesco Mobile services.
When purchasing fuel, the current rate is one point for every £2 spent, but this will change after June 14. From that date forward, customers will receive one point for every two litres of fuel bought.
A minimum of 150 points is required to generate a Clubcard voucher, which translates to £1.50 of spending power within Tesco stores.
Strategies to Extend Voucher Validity
For those who prefer not to spend their vouchers immediately at Tesco, there is a clever method to prolong their usability. By making a minimal purchase on the Tesco Clubcard Rewards website, the remaining balance is converted back into points in the Clubcard account.
The key is to spend as little as possible, such as 50p, to ensure the maximum amount is returned as points. For example, using a £5 voucher to spend 50p results in 450 points being credited back, equivalent to £4.50. These newly created points will then have a fresh two-year expiry period.
Maximising Voucher Value with Partners
Shoppers can also enhance the value of their Clubcard vouchers by utilising them with Rewards Partners. This option allows the vouchers to be doubled or tripled in worth when spent with establishments like Pizza Express, Alton Towers, or Hotels.com.
Checking Your Clubcard Balance
To verify your available vouchers, log into the Tesco Clubcard website using your account credentials. Navigate to “my Clubcard account” and select the “vouchers” section. A detailed table will display all remaining vouchers and their respective expiry dates.
Any unused vouchers can be spent directly online or printed for in-store use. Tesco boasts a membership of around 20 million Clubcard holders, underscoring the widespread impact of this expiry event.
With the deadline fast approaching, prompt action is essential to avoid losing these valuable savings. Consumers are urged to review their accounts and redeem vouchers before time runs out.
