Sophie Lux, who became a single mother at 19, has turned a £500 investment into a £1.1 million business, the UK Health and Beauty Awards, now set to host over 3,000 guests at Manchester's AO Arena on August 15.
From Council Estate to Entrepreneur
Lux, now 28, ran away from home at 14 but earned her GCSEs and hairdressing qualifications. After falling pregnant with her son Ronnie at 19, she resolved to change her life. Starting with hair extensions from her council estate home, she attracted wealthy clients and soon opened a salon with council funding, expanding into beauty and massage.
Frustration with Industry Awards
Despite her salon's success, Lux grew frustrated with industry awards, which she felt favored businesses with large marketing budgets over genuine talent. "It often felt like the companies spending the most on marketing and advertising were the ones walking away with the trophies," she told the Manchester Evening News. "I thought how is someone like me who has worked their butt off have a chance to win one of these awards if they won't even look at me fairly."
Creating a Fairer Platform
In 2021, Lux launched the UK Hair & Beauty Awards with just £500, building the website herself. The idea went viral within 24 hours. The first event in Birmingham in 2023 sold out with 600 attendees, leading to a second night. By 2025, the event had outgrown its venue, prompting the move to Manchester's AO Arena.
"It is for people like me who are good at their job," Lux said. "A lot of brands don't want to work with accents from the north - or if you don't talk right on camera."
Seven-Figure Success
The UK Health and Beauty Awards now employs seven full-time staff and is expected to turn over £1.1 million. The August 15 event will feature performances by Professor Green, Dappy, Fuse ODG, Tinchy Stryder, and Junior Andre, hosted by TV personality Jake Quickenden.
Lux closed her last salon last year to focus entirely on the awards. She is also developing a national qualification verification platform to allow consumers to check professionals' credentials.
"You don't have to come from money or have huge investment behind you to build something successful," Lux said. "You need resilience, belief, a willingness to keep learning and the determination to keep going when people tell you it won't work."
