Sydney Fish Market's New Home Draws Crowds for Good Friday Rush
For many shoppers, Good Friday marked their first visit to the newly upgraded Sydney Fish Market premises, which opened its doors in January. The Easter celebration brought a palpable buzz to the harbour city's famous seafood destination, with thousands expected to pass through over the holiday weekend.
Early Morning Bustle and Shopper Enthusiasm
Carmelo Lombardo, retail manager at GetFish, arrived at 2:30 am, noting that trade had been bustling since opening at 5 am. He expressed excitement about the new facility, stating, "We're feeling great about it because the atmosphere and the buzz within the actual building and site is sensational." This sentiment was echoed by shoppers like Buddy and Tony, who, laden with cooler bags after spending around a thousand dollars, praised the market as "the best thing since sliced cheese," highlighting its cleanliness, spaciousness, and ample parking.
Mixed Reactions to the Upgrade
While many embraced the change, not everyone was a fan. Angelo Vaxevani from Peter's Fish Market preferred the old premises, describing them as having "more of a vibe than what we have here today – more of a fish market. This here's more of a very nice, glorified Westfields." However, he acknowledged that Easter had drawn big crowds since Thursday, with an even larger lunch rush anticipated on Friday. Jesslyn, a customer, noted the new market felt more upmarket and consumer-friendly, adding, "It's a bit more upmarket and doesn't smell like fish compared to the old ones." Yet, some things remained unchanged, with one shopper overheard exclaiming, "Oh, it stinks!"
Family Traditions and Seafood Selections
The market was filled with families, such as Sydney mother Zee, who was shopping for oysters, sashimi, and fish for her children. Children could be heard asking parents if they could try various seafood items, adding to the festive atmosphere. The rush saw serious planning among couples deciding how many kilograms of fillets, oysters, scallops, and prawns to buy for entertaining over the long weekend. One eager shopper declared, "I just love crustaceans!" as they navigated the crowded aisles.
Overall, the new Sydney Fish Market proved a popular destination during the Good Friday rush, blending modern amenities with traditional Easter seafood shopping, despite some nostalgia for the old site's character.
