According to recent statistics, a third of the UK population experience damp and excessive cold, and as a result, mould, in their homes. Mould can not only damage property but also lead to health complications such as respiratory issues and allergies.
Home living experts at Vonhaus have compiled a list of handy hints to combat mould, including a surprising 99p item that can make a world of difference. Emily Caloe, a senior buyer at Vonhaus, explained that damp, humid environments are breeding grounds for mould, compounded by poor ventilation, leaks, condensation and high humidity levels.
One cheap and effective solution is shaving foam, which costs less than a pound. Caloe advised: “Start by giving your windows a good clean. Spread a thin layer of shaving cream over the glass; this shaving cream will act as a barrier, reducing condensation—a major cause of mould growth on windows. Let the foam sit for a few minutes until the excess is wiped off, and then let it sit with a thin, clear layer left behind.”
Alternatively, white distilled vinegar can help remove mould and kill spores. Mix one part vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle, apply to the affected area, and wipe down with a clean, damp cloth. The vinegar smell will disappear within a few hours. Always wear gloves and a mask when dealing with mould.
For overall humidity control, a dehumidifier is recommended. Ensure its size corresponds to the space, place it on the floor in damp-prone areas like basements, bathrooms, or kitchens, and regularly empty the water tank and clean the filter. Other tips include using exhaust fans, opening windows, wiping down moisture after cooking or showering, placing absorbent mats near sinks and tubs, avoiding drying clothes indoors unless well-ventilated, and addressing leaks promptly.
