Shrewsbury in Shropshire has been named Britain's best high street by The Telegraph, beating 19 other shopping destinations across the country. The town came top of the newspaper's list for the second year running in December 2025, finishing ahead of places including Norwich, Bury St Edmunds and Edinburgh.
Independent Shops and Historic Streets
One of the biggest reasons for the accolade is that Shrewsbury still has plenty of independent shops. Rather than walking past the same chains found in almost every town centre, visitors can spend hours browsing smaller businesses, boutiques and places selling unusual gifts.
Wyle Cop is one street that really stands out. It is a winding road lined with old timber-framed buildings, and is said to have the longest uninterrupted stretch of independent shops in Britain. There are 39 listed buildings along the street, with some dating back centuries. Shoppers can find everything from clothes and jewellery to vintage pieces, flowers and places to grab a coffee.
Wyle Cop received particular praise from The Telegraph, which highlighted the unusual mix of historic buildings and independent retailers.
Market Hall and Town Centre Appeal
Shrewsbury Market Hall has also become a destination in its own right. Inside are dozens of independent traders selling food, drinks, gifts and other items. The market was voted Britain's Favourite Market in 2025, its third consecutive win and fourth overall.
The town centre is just as appealing. The Square is surrounded by old buildings, shops, cafés and restaurants, while nearby streets such as Milk Street and Princess Street are filled with more independent businesses. Despite its old-fashioned appearance in places, Shrewsbury has a mixture of familiar high street names and smaller local shops.
History Beyond Shopping
Shopping is not the only reason to visit. The town is also known as the birthplace of Charles Darwin, and its connections to the naturalist can still be explored today. It is this combination of history and independent businesses that helped Shrewsbury stand out in The Telegraph's ranking.
