Shoppers snap up 50p-an-hour patio heater for garden parties

As the summer heatwave eases, Brits are turning to the Harrier 2000w Rounded Standing Outdoor Patio Heater, available on Amazon for £48.99, to keep garden gatherings going into cooler evenings. Shoppers have dubbed it a 'great little garden heater' for the price, and it costs around 50p an hour to run depending on electricity tariff and heat setting.

Features and flexibility

The heater can be used freestanding or wall-mounted and has an IPX4 rating, meaning it is designed for outdoor use with protection against water splashes. It offers three heat settings—low, medium, and high—so users can adjust warmth based on the outside temperature.

Its height is adjustable, and the head tilts between 0 and 45 degrees, allowing heat direction to be changed depending on where people are sitting. The heater comes with a 1.8m power cable and requires some assembly.

Alternatives and ratings

Another option is the Harry Outdoor Portable Heater for £99 from Dunelm, boasting 1200w of power and said to 'ensure warmth' wherever needed. On Yimbly, an online marketplace owned by Reach Plc, the Haven Debonair Waterproof Patio Heater is available for £59.99, claimed to heat up in just one second with three heating modes: 650w, 1300w, and 2000w.

The Harrier heater has received an average rating of 4.4 out of five stars on Amazon. One shopper said in a longer review: "I have to say, I am presently surprised at the quality of this heater, it is extremely well made and very sturdy, using high quality materials from what I can see. It took longer to remove it from the box than it did to put it together, despite the teeny tiny writing on the instructions. I couldn't read them, so I just looked at the photo and worked it out. The price for the heating is very reasonable and well within our budget."

Shopper feedback

Another reviewer commented: "Great little garden heater for the price. Gives off lots of heat. We have also used it in the garage. The included stand was very easily assembled, making the heater stable, and it also comes with wall mountings."

A third person said: "Love these heaters. They're easy to assemble, even though the instructions make the process sound more complicated than it actually is. They're cost-effective, compact, light, and have an adjustable height and lamp. The three heat levels are strong and effective." They added: "The only downside is the extremely short cord, which means you'll need to use an extension. What I discovered, having used an extension, that not all extensions work with these heaters. They need super-strong caravan-grade cables. The other ones just trip if you put the heater to a full level three."

Another shopper noted: "Really easy to put together. Looks smart, and the heat output is really good. Three settings so you adjust how much heat you want. The only issue is the cord length. It's only slightly longer than the height of the heater, so you will need to place it next to a socket or get an extension. Would have given five stars if the cord was longer. I also purchased a cover for it, to protect it from the weather."
