Cromars, a multi-award-winning fish and chip shop in St Andrews, Fife, has been named the Daily Record's latest Chippy of the Week. The restaurant and takeaway became Scotland's first dog-friendly fish and chip shop in 2025 when it introduced a menu specifically for dogs, with 50 per cent of sales going to the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA). The dog menu has raised more than £1,500 for the charity.
Award-winning fish and fresh ingredients
Cromars previously won Best Menu at the 2025 Scottish Fish and Chip Awards and took home the prize for Best Fish Supper at the 2023 Scottish Fish and Chip Awards. The eatery uses fish brought fresh from a fishmonger, while chips are delivered each day from its own potato man.
Its haddock is 'angel cut', meaning every order includes one eight-ounce whole fillet of fish. The eatery also prepares homemade tartare sauce and mushy peas fresh each morning.
Menu highlights and dog-friendly options
The main menu includes battered haddock, scampi, prawn cocktail, calamari, buttermilk chicken goujons, haggis, white and black puddings, smoked haddock and mozzarella fishcakes, smoked sausage, and half-battered pizza. There are separate vegetarian and children's menus, with the former including veggie sausage and homemade macaroni.
A dessert menu features deep-fried Mars bar, caramel-filled churros, ice cream tubs, and Oreo milkshakes. For lighter bites, sides include chip butties, chicken Caesar salad, Buffalo Farm mozzarella, and fritter rolls, as well as loaded chips with mac and cheese or salt and chilli chicken.
Charity support and customer praise
The dog menu includes sausages, dog sardines, and puppuccinos. SSPCA fundraising lead Claire Burns previously stated: "We're incredibly grateful to Cromars and their customers for raising £1,500 to support our work in protecting Scotland's animals. Every doggy supper enjoyed at Cromars has made a real difference."
Customers have praised the shop in Google reviews, with one stating: "Beautifully cooked fish batter crispy and lovely chips good treat for the dog so he could be there too what more could you want." Another visitor said: "Excellent chippy in central St Andrews, we visited for lunch before leaving town after a weekend break and were not disappointed. Fish was very fresh and chips were excellent with a decent bit of crisp to them."
