Retail Worker Abuse and Threats Surge, Doubling Since Pandemic
A new survey has uncovered a disturbing rise in abuse and threats against retail workers, with violent incidents more than doubling since the pandemic began. The findings, based on responses from almost 9,000 retail staff, indicate that such incidents remain significantly higher than pre-Covid levels recorded in 2019.
Shocking Statistics Reveal Widespread Abuse
The shopworkers’ union Usdaw described the results as "shocking", highlighting that four in five respondents reported being verbally abused in the past year. More than half faced threats, and one in ten experienced physical assaults. This persistent trend underscores a growing crisis in the retail sector, where employees are increasingly vulnerable while performing their duties.
Key Triggers: Customer Frustration and Theft
Joanne Thomas, Usdaw’s general secretary, emphasized that no one should feel afraid to go to work, yet nearly four in five members face abuse, threats, or assaults simply for doing their jobs. She identified customer frustration and theft as the two primary triggers for these incidents. Particularly concerning is the rise in customer frustration, often fueled by factors like self-service checkouts, stock shortages, and low staffing levels, which can lead customers to take out their anger on staff.
Calls for Action and Respect
Usdaw has long campaigned for public respect, urging customers to "keep their cool" and treat retail workers with decency. The union plans to present these findings to retail employers, advocating for safe staffing levels and better protection. Thomas stressed that retail workers provide essential services and deserve both respect and legal safeguards, reminding employers that these employees are the face of their businesses and should be valued and supported accordingly.
