Rangers face £2.2m transfer blow but star gives green light

Rangers have reportedly seen a £2.2m transfer bid for right-back Bryan Reynolds rejected by Belgian club Westerlo. However, it is claimed the defender has given the Ibrox side the 'green light' to push the move through.

Rangers' search for a right-back

Manager Danny Rohl is actively seeking reinforcements at right-back after losing James Tavernier and Max Aarons from last season's squad. This leaves Dujon Sterling as the only natural option in that position. Reports earlier this week indicated a 'concrete interest' in the 24-year-old, who impressed in the Jupiler Pro League last season.

Now, the pursuit has intensified. It is reported that Rangers tabled an opening bid of €2.5m (£2.2m), but Westerlo swiftly rejected it, as they are 'unwilling to let him leave for that amount'. Reynolds has one year remaining on his contract and is considered a key player for the Belgian side.

Player's stance could force a deal

Despite the rejection, it is understood that Reynolds has given Rangers the green light and would prioritise a move to Ibrox, even if other clubs express interest. This stance could put Westerlo in a difficult position if the saga drags on, especially since they risk losing him for free in 12 months.

Reynolds was not selected by Mauricio Pochettino for the USA's World Cup squad, making him available for talks immediately should Rangers see a second bid accepted. Meanwhile, Rangers have also been linked with a move to bring Nathan Patterson back to Ibrox, with an Everton exit for the right-back on the cards. However, Patterson has been called up for the World Cup, so that deal would likely need to wait until after the tournament.
