Around 46 stores closed across UK high streets in October 2026, with more closures expected in the coming weeks as cost pressures and shifting footfall trends hit household brands.
TG Jones leads October closures
Stationery chain TG Jones shut 22 sites this month as part of a sweeping 150-store restructuring scheme that is removing in-store Post Office counters from town centres. Branches closed from York to Stratford-upon-Avon, including locations in Bishop's Stortford, Bury St Edmunds, Inverness, Malvern, Truro, Maldon, Melton Mowbray, Bradford, Wickford, Bridgnorth, Hythe, Pinner, York, Rickmansworth, Marlborough, West Wickham, Stratford-upon-Avon, Ormskirk, Orpington, Droitwich, Billericay and Leek.
Discount giant B&M is preparing to close a 20,000-square-foot store in Liverpool within days, while fashion and homeware retailer TK Maxx will leave its long-standing site in Worthing's Montague Centre next week, relocating to a nearby vacant former Poundland unit.
Wider retail pressures
Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the Centre for Retail Research, said: "The problems of changed customer shopping habits, inflation, rising energy costs, rents and business rates have continued and forced many retailers to cut back even more strongly."
A planned programme of 23 standalone Lloyds Bank branches also shut their doors in October across England and Wales, spanning Rochdale on October 1 through to Braintree on October 29.
Other notable closures
Stationery retailer Typo closed a single shop in Eldon Square, Newcastle on October 9, after parent company Cotton On Group announced a full withdrawal from the UK by early 2027. Typo locations in Westfield Stratford, Bluewater, Cambridge, Meadowhall, Canterbury and the Gateshead Metrocentre remain temporarily open through the autumn and Christmas period before closing ahead of the 2027 exit deadline.
The B&M store on County Road, Walton, Liverpool is closing on Friday, November 6 due to local estate consolidation, with no jobs expected to be lost as staff will be relocated to nearby sites. TK Maxx in the Montague Centre, Worthing will close on Sunday, November 8, 2026, to relocate four days later to a former Poundland unit on Montague Street.
