M&S Shoppers 'Run' to Buy Jersey Royal Potatoes

Marks and Spencer shoppers have declared it the "best time of year," saying they are running to buy a popular item that returns each spring. Many are thrilled the product is back on shelves for them to enjoy.

Eagle-eyed shoppers have spotted that Jersey Royal potatoes are now available. These potatoes are well-loved for their unique taste. Jersey Royals are picked young and have a distinct, slightly sweet, nutty flavour with a firmer, waxier texture than many mainstream new potatoes.

They can elevate even the simplest dishes, requiring little preparation for extremely tasty results. Their short, eagerly anticipated season builds demand for these small potatoes.

Because the real deal is not available all year round, it creates huge hype around them, making them an unofficial marker of the spring season. For many, Jersey Royals are quite nostalgic, evoking memories of childhood dinners such as Sunday lunches, barbecues, and springtime meals with delightful potato salads.

They pair cleanly with classic flavours like butter, mint, parsley, lemon, mayonnaise, smoked fish, and grilled meat. They also do not crumble as easily as floury potatoes, making them ideal for salads and warm sides where a whole potato texture is desired.

Marks and Spencer wrote on Instagram: "New season Jersey Royals, Mini & Baby Jerseys have landed. Hand-selected from rich Jersey soils and grown the old-fashioned way. Best served classic - we recommend boiling them, smothering them in butter, seasoning them with salt and pepper and letting spring do the rest!"

In the comments, many said they would be "running" to get their hands on them, while others called it the "best time of year." A third commented: "Super tasty cooked in lots of ways. You decide! These are fantastic, always."

However, other shoppers lamented that they cannot get them easily, as they are already "sold out" due to their popularity. A second fumed that they are "sold out on Ocado," while a third wished they "could be shipped" to where she lives. "I love them, but they're never in stock," a fourth complained.

Why do Jersey Royal potatoes sell out so quickly?

They are a tightly seasonal product, and the first arrivals are the most coveted. Many shoppers actively look out for them as a sign that spring food has arrived, so when they finally appear on shelves, people buy immediately, often picking up multiple packs because they know they will not be around for long.

At the same time, supply is limited and variable. True Jersey Royals come from one place, and early-season volumes are naturally smaller. Weather, growing conditions, and harvest timing can all affect how many make it to market each week, so supermarkets may only receive modest allocations, especially at the start of the season.

Retail stocking patterns amplify this. Stores do not get unlimited top-ups during the day; they receive deliveries, fill the shelf, and what is out is out until the next delivery. If they are on promotion or placed prominently, they can be cleared quickly after restock, making it seem like they are "always sold out."

Finally, they are seen as a small premium treat that remains affordable. Even if the price is higher than standard new potatoes, many people will pay it because they believe the flavour and texture are noticeably better, and they do not view other potatoes as a like-for-like substitute. Thus, demand stays intense while availability remains constrained.
