Marks & Spencer has unveiled an ambitious expansion strategy, confirming a wish list of 500 potential locations across the United Kingdom where it aims to open new stores in the coming years. This bold move signals the retailer's commitment to growth and revitalising its physical presence in key markets.
Immediate Store Openings and Job Creation
In a significant update provided last year, the supermarket giant announced plans to open or revamp 20 M&S stores, a initiative projected to generate approximately 800 new employment opportunities. The company has already confirmed that new sites in Northwich, Abingdon, and Stonehaven will commence operations imminently, marking the first wave of this expansion.
Spring and Summer 2026 Launches
Looking ahead, M&S is set to welcome customers to additional new stores in Farnham and Northampton during the spring and summer of 2026. Notably, a new branch in Godalming is scheduled to open, which is poised to become M&S's largest standalone food store, underscoring the retailer's focus on enhancing its food division.
Recent openings have already taken place in Cannock and Bath, where the retailer has begun serving local communities. M&S has expressed a strategic interest in expanding into areas where it currently has no presence, such as Hove, Marlborough, and Wallingford, as part of its broader geographic diversification efforts.
Site Requirements and Strategic Vision
The supermarket is actively seeking sites throughout the UK that can accommodate trading spaces of approximately 18,000 square feet, with a gross area of 25,000 square feet. Alex Freudmann, Managing Director of M&S Food, commented on the strategy, stating, "The strong performance of our new M&S food stores gives us the confidence to explore even more locations across the UK, from Elgin to Exmouth."
Freudmann added, "With more than twenty stores opening or modernised before the end of the financial year, we are moving faster. Our team want new sites where we could open a large M&S Food store as we deliver on our strategy to bring the right stores to the right places and offer the best shopping experience, range and availability for our customers."
Financial Performance and Challenges
This expansion follows a period of mixed financial results for M&S. Over the Christmas season, the retailer experienced a record number of shoppers visiting its stores, with food sales growing by 5.6% over the 13 weeks to December 27, compared on a like-for-like basis with the previous year. However, the fashion, home, and beauty division saw a decline, with sales dipping by 2.9% year on year.
Online sales growth was offset by reduced spending in physical stores, which M&S partly attributed to "reduced high street footfall" across British high streets. Additionally, the retailer faced significant challenges from a major cyber attack last year, which disrupted its stock data and management systems. In November, M&S revealed that this incident was expected to impact annual profits by around £136 million, including approximately £34 million in the final six months of the financial year.
The cyber attack forced M&S to halt all online sales for about six weeks and led to empty shelves due to logistics system disruptions, following the hacker targeting around Easter weekend. Looking forward, M&S plans to "reshape" the business for growth amidst an "uncertain consumer environment," focusing on transforming stores and reducing costs to navigate these challenges.
Confirmed Expansion Locations
The retailer has officially confirmed the following locations for its expansion efforts:
- Northwich
- Abingdon
- Cannock
- Stonehaven
- Bath
- Farnham
- Godalming
- Northampton
This comprehensive plan highlights M&S's proactive approach to adapting to market dynamics while capitalising on opportunities for growth in the competitive retail landscape.
