M&S Closes 6,000 Sq Ft Warrington Store After Less Than Year

Marks and Spencer (M&S) has confirmed the closure of its 6,000 square foot store at Riverside Retail Park in Warrington, which shut its doors today after less than a year of operation. The closure was announced last month, with the retailer stating that the store's performance is not 'where it needs to be.'

Closure Details and Customer Alternatives

The Warrington store, which opened less than 12 months ago, is part of M&S's broader store rotation programme. Regional manager Pete Dobson said at the time of the announcement: 'We’d like to thank all of our customers who have shopped with us and our colleagues.' The nearest alternative M&S locations for Warrington residents are the Gemini Retail Park store or the Stockton Heath food hall.

M&S's £300 Million Store Rotation Programme

M&S is currently investing over £300 million in a store rotation programme that involves opening new large stores and food halls nationwide while closing underperforming sites. The programme aims to 'rotate and renew stores' to adapt to changing consumer habits. This has led to multiple closures, including the permanent shutdown of the £117 million Newport store yesterday due to a lease expiry and shifting shopping behaviours, and the closure of the flagship Oxford Street store in Swansea last month.

Impact on Employees and Community

M&S has also confirmed the closure of its store in Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex, putting around 50 jobs at risk. Despite efforts to redeploy employees, the decision has been finalised. Residents signed a petition to stop the closure, but it proceeded. Will Holden, regional manager at M&S, told the Colchester Gazette: 'Since we shared our proposals last month, we have consulted with our colleagues and can now confirm that our Walton-on-the-Naze store will close. I’d like to thank everyone who has shopped with us at the store over the years and we will continue working hard to serve you over the coming months, and in future at our nearby Clacton Brook Park food hall.'

Broader Retail Trends

The closures reflect broader trends in UK retail, where high street giants are adapting to online shopping and changing consumer preferences. M&S's strategy involves investing in larger, more modern stores and food halls while closing smaller or underperforming sites. The company has stated that it is committed to serving customers through its remaining network of stores and online channels.
