Mother Hubbard's, a fish and chip chain claiming to be the UK's 'most famous chippy', has opened its doors in Newcastle, drawing crowds with Newcastle United-themed decor and a launch discount.
Opening day and location
The new branch opened for business on Saturday, August 15, in a prime location opposite the NX music venue on Clayton Street. Black and white balloons marked the occasion outside, while inside, a large portrait of the late Kevin Keegan hung in the window, alongside photos of Newcastle United's Carabao Cup-winning team, newspaper cuttings, and a replica trophy.
History and expansion
The first Mother Hubbard's branch opened in 1972 in Bradford, with then Coronation Street stars Bernard Youens and Jean Alexander, who played Stan and Hilda Ogden, performing the honours. Since then, the chain has established itself as a food and drink legend in West Yorkshire, with shops in Halifax, Huddersfield, and Wakefield, as well as locations across the UK including Shrewsbury, Dundee, Worcester, and Watford. Newcastle is the 97th Mother Hubbard's branch in the UK.
Menu and offers
To mark the opening, the chippy launched with a 50% off offer on the full menu. Besides the traditional fish and chips, the menu includes pies, pasties, burgers, and meal deals, as well as an array of ice creams. Deliveries are expected to become available in the next few weeks.
