Morrisons has launched a Fish and Chip Afternoon Tea for £15, combining two British classics: fish and chips and afternoon tea. The meal includes six fish bites, six pieces of scampi, bread and butter, chunky chips, mushy peas, and two fruit scones with jam and clotted cream.
Reporter's Experience at Morrisons Cafe
Daily Express reporter Toby Codd visited his nearest Morrisons Cafe to try the new offering. The cafe was quiet and did not advertise the meal on table menus. A staff member confirmed it was available but revealed they had sold only one portion in over three weeks, suggesting poor advertising or lack of customer interest.
The Big Mistake: Dining Alone
Codd's main mistake was eating alone. The portion size is designed for two people, featuring a three-tier stand with a large quantity of food. He faced a plate full of fish bites, scampi, four slices of buttered bread, a generous portion of chips, and two large scones.
Food Quality and Taste
The fish bites had a light, crisp batter and tender cod. The scampi were hot, sweet, and juicy, served with tartare sauce. The second tier had plain white bread and chips; the chips were not as crispy as expected but were plentiful and well-salted. The scones were airy and crumbly, served with jam and clotted cream. Codd, being Devonian, applied cream first.
Disappointment and Overall Verdict
The only disappointment was the mushy peas, which Codd declined to elaborate on. He could only manage one scone due to fullness. Despite this, he praised the meal as excellent value for money, combining fish and chips with scones on a stand. He recommends sharing between two people.
