Morrisons Announces Major Head Office Restructuring with 200 Job Cuts
Supermarket chain Morrisons has revealed plans to cut approximately 200 positions at its head office as part of a significant restructuring initiative. The Bradford-based retailer informed employees on Monday afternoon about the proposed job reductions, which will affect less than 10% of the workforce at its Hilmore House headquarters.
AI Integration and Operational Streamlining
The restructuring forms part of a broader strategy to concentrate on core business activities, streamline processes, and automate manual tasks. Morrisons emphasized its commitment to capitalizing on data and artificial intelligence to enhance performance across its operations.
This move follows a long-term programme launched last year to overhaul the company's central business operations. The retailer stated that these changes are necessary to adapt and evolve in a competitive market.
Recent Restructuring History
This announcement comes just one month after Morrisons identified up to 100 office staff at risk due to plans to merge two divisions responsible for sourcing products for both convenience stores and supermarkets. The company has been implementing various restructuring measures as part of its ongoing transformation under chief executive Rami Baitieh.
Despite these workforce reductions, Morrisons recently reported continued sales growth, indicating progress in its turnaround efforts. The retailer acknowledged current challenges for customers and pledged further investment in pricing to support shoppers during difficult economic times.
Company Statement and Support Measures
A Morrisons spokesperson explained: "As we evolve and adapt, we are proposing to make some changes to a number of areas within our central structure. This will involve making some tough but necessary decisions which will impact on colleagues in our head office."
The company has initiated a consultation process with affected employees and committed to providing full support, including assistance in finding alternative roles within the business where possible. Morrisons emphasized understanding the difficulty of this news for impacted staff members.
The restructuring reflects broader trends in the retail sector as companies increasingly turn to technology and operational efficiency measures to remain competitive in challenging market conditions.
