Meat:Stack and Colmans launch Hot Fish Sandwich in Newcastle

Two Newcastle food institutions, Meat:Stack and Colmans Fish and Chips, have teamed up to create a limited-edition Hot Fish Sandwich, available from August 21. The sandwich will be served in a fresh stottie with salt and vinegar chips and curry sauce, and will be on sale for one month at Meat:Stack's Groat Market branch for £11.50.

Collaboration Details

The collaboration marks a first for both restaurants, combining Colmans' century-old fish and chips expertise with Meat:Stack's sandwich-making approach. Charlie Mair, operations director at Meat:Stack, said: “We’ve spent years obsessing over burgers and sandwiches - how they eat, the balance of flavours, textures and making sure every ingredient earns its place. Colmans bring more than 100 years of knowledge when it comes to fish and chips, so being able to take that experience and combine it with the way we approach a sandwich has been brilliant.”

Charlie, who co-founded Meat:Stack with Allan Hyslop and Tom Westman, added: “The Hot Fish Sandwich is exactly what we want from a collaboration like this - familiar enough that you immediately want to eat it but different enough that you couldn’t get it from either of us normally.”

Anniversaries and Expansion

Colmans is celebrating its centenary this year, with an exhibition, Colmans: 100 Years of Fish and Chips, currently on show at South Shields Museum and Art Gallery. The company has also taken over the Village Café in Whitburn. Meat:Stack is marking 10 years since its launch, with outlets in the Groat Market and Grainger Market in Newcastle, as well as one in Leeds.

Dominic Colman Ord, director and fifth generation of the Colmans family, said: “The guys at Meat:Stack never stand still and we love that they’re always looking to reinvent the wheel. All year we’ve been keeping an eye out for unique ways to celebrate our 100th anniversary and the Hot Fish Sandwich is a fantastic twist on a firm favourite. Collaborating with another North East restaurant that shares our commitment to serving quality food and delivering outstanding customer service was too good an opportunity to turn down.” He added: “Meat:Stack has a reputation for doing things differently - and doing things well - so we know this partnership’s going to be a huge success!”

The sandwich is produced by Meat:Stack, with Colmans providing the fish recipe. Allan Hyslop summed up the collaboration as "Colmans doing what they do brilliantly, Meat:Stack doing what we do and finding the bit in the middle where something new and exciting can happen.” Tom Westman added: “The region has a brilliant independent food scene and I think collaborations like this show what can happen when established institutions and newer businesses work together rather than operating in their own lanes.”
