Liverpool could complete a free transfer for Jadon Sancho this summer, six years after Jurgen Klopp admitted the winger would be a great signing for the club. The 26-year-old is set to leave Manchester United when his contract expires on June 30, ending a disappointing five-year spell at Old Trafford.
Sancho's United Exit
Despite having the option to extend his deal by an extra year, United's hierarchy opted to release the winger, who has not played for the club since August 2024. Sancho's career could have taken a different path if Klopp had his wish in 2020, before the player's move to United.
The former England star was linked with the Red Devils in his penultimate season at Borussia Dortmund, while German publication Kicker reported that he favoured a move to Anfield. Fresh from winning the Premier League title for the first time, Klopp was asked about Liverpool's chances of signing the then-highly rated talent.
Klopp's Admiration
He told German newspaper Bild: "The red shirt [of Liverpool] would suit very well. I don't think such a transfer will be possible this season. He [Sancho] is a very interesting player. If he's coming to Liverpool I would be the most surprised of all of us."
A year later, Sancho became a United player in a £73 million deal, joining the club alongside the returning Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane.
Free Agent Status
Sancho's impending free agent status means he is available, though his career has stalled in recent years, diminishing the appeal of signing him. While a move to Liverpool seems unlikely given his lack of suitability to Andoni Iraola's high-tempo style, the Reds are in need of attacking reinforcements.
With Mohamed Salah leaving the club, Hugo Ekitike's injury likely ruling him out for the first half of the season, and Federico Chiesa's uncertain future, Liverpool fans could witness a revamp of their forward line.
Replacing Salah
Replacing Salah will be an almost impossible task, but should the Reds win the race for Yan Diomande, he could be a worthy successor. Reports last month indicated that the Premier League side are leading the chase for the RB Leipzig winger, who is also attracting interest from Paris Saint-Germain.
The Bundesliga side have reportedly placed an £87 million valuation on their 19-year-old starlet, who on Monday helped the Ivory Coast defeat Ecuador 1-0 in their opening World Cup 2026 match.
