Lidl is launching a new raincoat this weekend that costs under £20 and closely resembles more expensive versions sold at Next and John Lewis. The Esmara Beige Ladies' Raincoat will be available in all UK stores from Sunday, November 1, priced at £14.99 for Lidl Plus members and £17.99 for regular shoppers.
The coat is part of Lidl's new 'Winter Clothing' range, which arrives as part of the retailer's Special Buy deals in the Middle Aisle. These offers are refreshed every Thursday and Sunday.
Design and Features
The 100% polyester coat comes with a hood and side pockets, and is available in small, medium or large. Shoppers can choose from beige, navy or a leopard-print design. It features a full two-way zip with storm guard and press studs.
According to Lidl, the coat has a "Water-repellent outer fabric thanks to Bionic-Finish Eco technology. Waterproof and windproof with sealed main seams."
Comparison with Next's £180 Coat
The Lidl raincoat is positioned as a budget-friendly alternative to Next's £180 Helly Hansen Natural Moss Insulated PU Coat. Both share a classic, minimalist "fisherman's raincoat" style, with mid-thigh length, protective hoods, front flaps that hide zippers and snap closed, and side pockets.
The key differences lie in materials and performance. The Lidl coat is a lightweight, uninsulated polyester shell designed mainly for rain protection on warmer days, while the Helly Hansen version uses a heavier, rubbery polyurethane fabric with built-in insulation, making it thicker, heavier, and warmer in cold weather.
John Lewis Alternative
The navy version of the Lidl coat also shares features with John Lewis' £90 Didriksons Elly Windproof and Waterproof Shell Parka. The product description for the Didriksons coat states: "Elly is an everyday jacket in Galon that combines style and function." It is completely windproof and waterproof with welded seams for a 100% waterproof construction, suitable for everyday use and outdoor activities. The jacket has a straight fit and a fixed hood adjustable with riptape for extra protection.
The choice ultimately depends on shopper preference: those who like the look of the Helly Hansen or Didriksons Elly coats but want to save money may consider the Lidl version, which offers a similar appearance for a fraction of the price, though it will feel different to wear.
