Kitchenware retailer Lakeland has announced the closure of four of its UK branches, resulting in the loss of 40 jobs. The company, which operates nearly 70 stores nationwide, confirmed the closures with regret, citing challenging market conditions.
The Ipswich store will shut in early January, followed by branches in Cardiff and Epsom, Surrey, in February, and Perth in May. Lakeland said it was 'very proud of our store teams' and would support affected staff.
Founded in 1964 in Windermere, Cumbria, the chain emphasised that retail remains integral to its ethos. 'Wherever there are opportunities to trade profitably, we will seek to agree, renew and extend leases with landlords,' the company stated.
Market research firm Springboard noted that UK shopper numbers are on average a quarter below 2019 levels. The Ipswich store, located in the 15th-century Ancient House owned by Ipswich Borough Council, will be vacated. The council expressed disappointment but hopes to secure a new tenant in 2021.
