Joanie Clothing, a British fashion label known for its vintage-inspired designs, has announced it is closing its doors after nearly nine years. The brand, established in October 2016 and based in North Yorkshire, shared the news via Instagram, citing a combination of adverse trading conditions including Brexit, the Covid-19 pandemic, economic uncertainty, and international trade barriers.
In a statement, the company said: 'We've enjoyed many successful, fun moments along the way but in recent years we have met with so many challenges too, many outside of our control. We've tried our very best to respond to the adverse trading conditions we've faced and find the strength and means to keep going, but unfortunately there is no more.'
Joanie's designs were rooted in 1950s and 1960s styles, inspired by the founder's great aunt Joanie. The label gained a loyal following for its whimsical prints and timeless appeal, expanding to customers in 59 countries and hosting pop-up events in London. Celebrities such as Amanda Holden, Dianne Buswell, and Claudia Winkleman were known to wear the brand, and it collaborated with actress Christina Hendricks on a capsule collection.
The brand paid tribute to its customers, saying: 'We are hugely grateful to our loyal Joanie Gals around the world who have bought clothes and, in many cases, filled whole wardrobes with our label. We have been so proud to dress you.' The closure marks the end of a fashion era that celebrated retro charm and individuality.
