Greggs' first international branch, which opened at Tenerife South Airport earlier this year, is selling beer alongside its classic sausage rolls, pizza slices and steak bakes. Customers can order a 50cl serving of either Stella Artois or Dorada with their food.
Beer prices at the airport branch
The beer is cheaper than a typical pub pint in the UK. A Stella at this Greggs costs €4.20 (£3.52), while the Dorada is €3.90 (£3.27). By comparison, the average cost of a pub pint in the UK is £4.52, according to the British Beer and Pub Association, though in many places the price has risen well over £5.
Online, the idea of getting a beer at Greggs has been popular, with some branding it 'wild'. In response to an Instagram post by @britlife_, @kj95007dw called it a 'Northerner's dream', while @its.dan.dd wrote: 'Life has peaked… That's it. Game over.' @hendo1980 added: 'We've peaked as a species.' Others demanded the 'bargain' prices be 'normalised' in airports and said it was a great example of 'British culture' and felt like 'being at the football'. Not everyone was impressed, as @alax_pulleb called the combo 'deeply depressing'.
Other chains serving alcohol in Spain
Greggs is not the only fast food chain serving alcohol in Spain. McDonald's offers customers the option to enjoy their burger and fries with a Mahou beer, and there are also non-alcoholic and gluten-free beer options. At Burger King in Spain, meals can be paired with an Estrella Damm.
Meanwhile, Greggs has launched a new Christmas menu in the UK, including the return of the Festive Bake, as well as a Pigs Under Blankets Toastie, a Festive Feast Baguette and a Festive Flatbread.
