A grandmother has been left humiliated after being accused of stealing a single banana worth just £1.10 by Asda security.
The 66-year-old shopper, who wishes to remain anonymous, was stopped by staff at the supermarket in Wigan, Greater Manchester, as she tried to leave the store.
She claims she was publicly accused of theft despite having receipts for all her shopping—including the banana in question.
'I Was Treated Like a Criminal'
The pensioner, who has no previous criminal record, said: 'I was treated like a common thief. I had paid for everything, but they still dragged me aside and demanded to check my bags.'
She added: 'It was so embarrassing—other shoppers were staring at me. All this over a banana!'
Asda's Response
Asda has since apologised, stating that it was a 'misunderstanding' and that staff were following standard security procedures.
A spokesperson said: 'We sincerely regret any distress caused. Our team members are trained to handle such situations with sensitivity, and we are reviewing this incident.'
Public Outrage
The story has gone viral on social media, with many users slamming Asda for its heavy-handed approach.
One Twitter user wrote: 'Asda should be ashamed—targeting an elderly woman for a banana is beyond ridiculous.'
Others have called for a boycott of the supermarket chain until it issues a formal apology.
