Chelsea Open Talks for Danny Welbeck Transfer at Age 35
Chelsea Open Talks for Danny Welbeck Transfer

Chelsea have initiated club-to-club negotiations with Brighton & Hove Albion regarding a potential move for striker Danny Welbeck. The Blues are looking to bolster their attacking options ahead of the 2026/27 campaign under manager Xabi Alonso.

Welbeck's Recent Form

At 35 years old, Welbeck enjoyed a resurgence last season, netting 14 goals and providing two assists in all competitions for Brighton. His performances have caught the attention of Chelsea's hierarchy, who have started talks to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

Current Striking Options

While Joao Pedro registered 15 goals and eight assists in the Premier League last season, Liam Delap struggled, scoring just once in 28 appearances, raising questions about his future at the club. The potential signing of Welbeck would add experience and depth to Chelsea's forward line.

Brighton declined to comment when contacted about the negotiations.

Summer Transfer Activity

Chelsea have had a slow start to the summer transfer window but have already secured several additions: Morgan Rogers, Marco Palestra, Geovany Quenda, Emmanuel Emegha, Denner, and Dastan Satpaev, though most deals were finalized before this summer.

The pursuit of Welbeck follows a failed attempt to add midfield experience, with Chelsea's £8 million bid for Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka rejected last month.
