Charity Shop Worker Reveals the One Gift They Wish People Would Stop Donating
Charity shop worker's plea: Stop donating this one item

Working in a charity shop often means sorting through countless donated items, but one employee has revealed the one gift they wish people would stop bringing in altogether. Despite good intentions, hundreds of these items end up being resold rather than finding new homes.

The Most Over-Donated Item

The worker, who chose to remain anonymous, explained that scented candles are the most frequently donated—and least wanted—item. "People buy them as last-minute gifts, then donate them when they realise they don’t suit their home or tastes," they said. "We get so many that we can’t possibly sell them all."

Why Candles Are a Problem

Overwhelming stock: Charity shops receive far more scented candles than they can display or sell, leading to excess stock that often gets discarded.

Low resale value: Unlike clothing or books, candles have a limited shelf life and appeal, making them harder to sell.

Storage issues: Fragile and bulky, candles take up valuable space that could be used for more in-demand items.

What to Donate Instead

The worker suggests focusing on practical, high-quality donations that shoppers actually need:

  • Gently worn clothing (especially seasonal items)
  • Books in good condition
  • Household essentials (pots, pans, small appliances)
  • Unopened toiletries

"We appreciate every donation," they added, "but it helps if people consider whether an item will actually sell before dropping it off."
